Background

Health span—the period of life spent in good health, free from chronic disease and disability—has emerged as a central goal for human longevity. While advances in medical care, public health, nutrition, and technology have collectively contributed to increased life expectancy, this progress prompts an essential question: are the additional years of life truly lived in good health and functional independence?

The study of human aging and longevity is a rapidly evolving field that has garnered growing attention and generated a vast body of scientific data in recent years. Researchers and clinicians alike are increasingly recognizing that extending lifespan without parallel improvements in health span may place considerable burdens on individuals, families, and healthcare systems.

This realization has fueled an important shift in focus—from simply prolonging life to enhancing the quality of life throughout the extended years. The discussion surrounding lifespan and health span now occupies a critical intersection between clinical medicine, nutrition, nursing, and laboratory science, as well as broader social and behavioral sciences.

Aging is a complex, multifactorial process influenced by genetic, metabolic, lifestyle, and environmental factors. Addressing its challenges requires an interdisciplinary approach that integrates preventive strategies, early diagnosis, personalized treatment, and supportive care. Such collaboration can better address the diverse biological, clinical, and psychosocial dimensions of aging.

Ultimately, the pursuit of healthy aging and longevity is not only a biomedical endeavor but also a societal commitment—ensuring that the added years are lived with vitality, dignity, and purpose. Against this backdrop, the aim of this symposium is to bring together experts and practitioners from nutrition, medicine, nursing, and clinical laboratory sciences to share the latest research, innovations, and best practices, fostering collaborative strategies that enhance both the quality and length of life.

About Event

Welcome to the 4th Lawang Sewu International Symposium on Medical and Health Sciences (4th LEWIS-MHS) an annual international event organized by Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang (UNIMUS). This year’s theme, “Innovations for Healthy Aging: Translating Research into Clinical and Community Practice,” invites lecturers, professionals, researchers, and students to engage in a rich exchange of knowledge and ideas.

The 4th LEWIS-MHS will be held on October 21st, 2026, in Semarang, Indonesia, and conducted online to enable global participation. The symposium will highlight multidisciplinary approaches to healthy aging, bridging research and practice across nutrition, medicine, nursing, and clinical laboratory sciences.
